These quilts are fairly easy to wash. The advice is primarily for hand washing because if you do use a machine you need to be careful. If your machine is big enough, you can use a 30 degree hand wash / delicate cycle on the lowest spin. It's actually the spinning that causes the biggest problem because spinning will likely break the stitching and clump together the wadding as it gets thrown around too much. 
It's best done in the summer months and so you have the weather to dry them easier. Don't dry in direct sunlight for too long as the dyes can be subtle and may slightly fade in strong sunlight for a long time. 
So, step by step:
Hand wash is the best option if you're concerned of the capability of a very delicate wash in the machine (it depends on the age and quality of your machine)
Machine wash if your machine is big enough and can do super gentle cold wash and low spin cycles
When removing it from the machine, do so very gently as it will be heavier than normal from the excess water, take care not to pull and break any stitching
Dry on a rack or as flat as possible
Use gentle eco detergent for natural fabrics or wool, without chemicals
